Biography
Joana Marques Marto got her MPharm from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon (FFUL) in 2010. She started her professional activity in a Portuguese pharmaceutical company, Laboratórios Atral. To further develop her career, she started her Ph.D. research work in January 2012 and obtained a doctoral degree in Pharmacy, area of Pharmaceutical Technology, from the University of Lisbon, in March 2016. Since 2012, she is a qualified safety assessor of cosmetic products, certified by the Vrije Universiteit Brussels. From 2016 to 2019 she also worked as a researcher in Laboratório Edol – Produtos Farmacêuticos, S.A.. Since 2017 she is an integrated Ph.D. researcher in the Research Institute for Medicines (iMed.ULisboa) and currently she also is an Assistant Professor at FFUL. Since the beginning of her career, Joana Marto’s main research interests have been the development of medicines and cosmetics for topical application and the development of new drug delivery systems under the perspective of Quality by Design (QbD). Further, she always focused on transposing the fundamental research to the applied (market). While developing her career, she strengthened this by transferring the knowledge of Pharmaceutical Technology to the market and the society, developing medicines available for hospitals and pharmaceutical industry. Related to this, is the fact that she coordinates and is an active participant in projects mainly financed by the industry. Currently, Joana Marto is the supervisor of one Ph.D. and several M.Sc. students, with several of these co-supervised by researchers from hospitals and from the pharmaceutical industry. She also is the principal investigator in the ongoing project PTDC/MEC-DER/30198/2017, which aims to develop therapies based in serotonergic drugs to treat mild to severe psoriasis. Concerning teaching activities, she is the co-responsible for the FFUL curricular unit “Individualized Formulation”, and the blended learning (b-learning) post-graduation course “Advanced Cosmetology”, the latter being considered innovative in her scientific area. Joana Marto published 48 scientific papers, 37 of which in peer-reviewed journals, 3 book chapters, submitted one national patent application, and has more than 100 communications in scientific meetings. She was awarded several national and international prizes, concerning her scientific research and community services. All the work Joana Marto developed during her career has been significantly enriched by several national and international collaborations, which contributed to her wide experience in Pharmaceutical Technology, especially in the areas of regulation, development and characterization of medication and cosmetics for topical application.
